Clone SD card

After making my guide for installing motion on a raspberry pi, and how to convert a dummy camera into a working camera, I have had to re-install raspbian and motion over and over as the raspberry pi has failed to start up after a reboot.

After doing that a few times, it quickly gets very boring… My work around of that problem so far is to simply clone the SD card.

Clone the card

  1. Download Win32 Disk Imager (http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/)
  2. Put your SD card with a working installation of raspbian and motion into your computer
  3. Start Win32 Disk Imager
  4. Select the card reader you put your SD card into
  5. Press the “open” button and select where you want to store your file (I took D:/picam.img)
  6. To start the copy press “Read”

Restore the card

  1. Put your SD card with a working installation of raspbian and motion into your computer
  2. Start Win32 Disk Imager
  3. Select the card reader you put your SD card into
  4. Press the “open” button and select where you stored your file when you made the clone (I took D:/picam.img)
  5. To start copying the image back to the card, press “Write”

Hopefully this will save you some time when your raspberry pi crash next time. šŸ™‚
